You're going to get to tell us all the great things that you guys do here at the fire department.

We're going to get to see a lot of things that kids don't normally get to see.

We will show you everything here at the Grand Rapids Fire Department and headquarters.

And the building that you're in right now is over 100 years old.

So I'm wondering about these trucks.

This is a huge, beautiful truck.

Yes, this is engine eight, and it is stationed on a coal station on the west side.

And it's being repaired right now in our garage here at the Grand Rapids Fire Department.

So you've got your own repair shop here.

We do.

These are Grand Rapids firefighters are emergency vehicle technicians, and they're all certified.

And they work on our machines when we have an issue.

And engine eight right now has an issue when it is working, how many people can fit on a truck?

We typically have three people on the engine and four people on a truck, if we can, with staffing, but typically three people on on each of our machines.

So everything smells delicious.

It's like you guy are getting ready for breakfast.

How many people are you cooking for here?

Well, I think there's seven on duty today.

And how do you decide who has to cook?

You know, it really is a talent.

Whoever wants to cook can step up.

Or sometimes we play cards to see who loses the cards has to cook, and we do our own dishes.

Who's going to be the dish?

So you even have bets here.

We do.

And it's important for our firefighter to get the rest that they need.

But even when they're on shift and their sleep, if we get a call, they're up and at it.

And so what is the though with you having a 24 hour shift?

I would imagine if you had like an eight hour shift, that just would be to disruptive to your day, right?

It really is.

If we're here for 24 hours, we have the continuance of of our personne and everything gets dialed in.

And so it's really a lot more effective for us to be here on a 24 hour basis for our response needs of the community.

And so when you work on your 24 hour shifts, are you usually working with the same guys?

We are and that's our family.

So our second family is very important to us.

So i somebody wants to be a fireman, is there a fireman school or how do you do that.

So firefighters do go to school.

But the most important thing I thin here in the city of Grand Rapids is that will hire you as long as you've got your high school diploma, you're 18 of age and maybe you've got some special skill set and you're really concerned about the community.

There are some of the basics.

I like to hire squirrels.

You know what?

We really I think we should get a squirrel.

A team of squirrel would be wonderful to have here, because sometime we have to get them in the trees in a very tight spaces.

Really good at that.

I mean, figuring out where things are.

Or maybe somebody is trapped.

You can get into those places and then come back and let us know that intelligence component and we can respond better.

They're just checking all their equipment, making sure everything's working, makin sure everything's in the truck.

But yeah, it's we're really luck to have them looking out for us.

And anyways, we want to thank all the me and women at the fire department for all the time and thanks for their service, because it's nice that we know that they're going to be there if we need them.
